Debt Reduction

Most people who have debt problems don’t have them because they bought a flat-screen TV on credit. Most people slowly sink into the murky depths of debt because they made dozens, possibly hundreds of small purchases on credit over a long period of time. And once mired in debt, it seems like there is no way to reduce it.

There is hope for everyone who struggles with debt. Debts can be reduced and eventually eliminated. Mathematically, debt can be reduced in two ways, by making more money or spending less money.

Everyone wants to make more money, but no one wants to do more work. The chilling reality is that most people will probably have to do more work if they want to make more money. Making money is the soundest way of reducing debt. The best way to make money is to work.

A person who struggles with debt may want to take on a second job. Besides for the obvious benefit of garnering an additional paycheck every week, a second job will rob that person of leisure time. They will be unable to spend money on much more than necessities and their debt will be reduced.

Idle hands are reportedly the devil’s playthings, and in this case, the devil is debt.

When most people imagine themselves at a second job, they see themselves in a paper hat, staring at a Fry Daddy. They say to themselves, “Why should I stoop to that? Iím a professional. I’m not going to clean fry gunk off of anyone’s stove, not even to reduce my debt.”

Well, that person is right. A professional should not waste their time working menial jobs. In most cities, a professional can find countless part-time opportunities in their own field and be paid for their skilled labor without having to welcome anyone to a fast food restaurant. It is a good idea to work smarter instead of harder when it comes to debt reduction.

An art teacher who finds himself in debt can teach workshops on the weekends, or he can privately tutor in the evenings. A graphic designer who wants to reduce her debts can find freelance work simply by scouring the internet for it. Even the put-upon fast-food worker can work part time in a different, possibly classier fast-food restaurant. There is hope for anyone who wishes to minimize their debt.

Hard work is the key to debt reduction. Even if a person doesn’t want to take on a second job, they will still have to spend less. That means the person will have to sacrifice many of life’s little luxuries: Don’t eat in restaurants, quit smoking, buy generic brand food, ride a bike to work twice a week instead of driving, talk on the telephone less, wait to see movies on DVD.

Spending less will also leave a person in debt longer than getting a second job. That’s why the best way to reduce debt is to take that second job. It will leave less time to create new debt and can significantly increase overall income. When the debt is reduced to nothing, perhaps the second job will become a method of saving for a much-needed vacation.
